Meet Laurel Roberts-Meese, LMFT

Get to know Laurel

Before I was a therapist, I was a teacher, family assistant, and worked in crisis response for survivors of sexual assault.

What I love about being a therapist is how creative and collaborative I get to be every day in helping people feel better. Research is an important starting place for helping us understand what works for many people, but it doesn't always tell us what works for specific individuals. I love figuring it out together.

I'm really interested in how culture shapes our individual experiences, specifically how patriarchy and other systems of power and oppression impact the mental health of women, trans people, and people of color. I'm also a lifelong student of the Enneagram and find it to be a powerful tool in helping my clients achieve their full potential.

In my free time I love to cook, bake, lift weights, do puzzles, read, and sing with Vox Femina Los Angeles.

  • During our first few sessions, we'll get to know each other, make sure we're a good fit, and decide on some goals for working together. After that, I check in regularly to make sure you feel heard and that we're working on issues that are important to you in ways that feel productive and safe. Questions are always welcome; I aim to demystify therapy for everyone I meet.

  • As therapists go, I'm active and conversational, and I love to collaborate with you and other healthcare providers to help you achieve your goals. I'm curious, engaged, and enjoy exploring new ways of thinking and processing what's happening in your life. I'm open to feedback and think humor has an important role in the therapy process.

I'm trained in many different types of therapy and my style is active and eclectic. Depending on your needs, I use techniques from a variety of theoretical orientations, which I'm happy to talk about if you're a therapy nerd like me. I also incorporate mindfulness practices, feminist theory, the Enneagram, and somatics into my work.

If you feel like you'd work well with a therapist who is conversational, direct, and warm, I would love to hear from you.

  • I earned a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Dominican University of California in 2012. Prior to that, I worked as a teacher and in crisis response for survivors of sexual assault.

Before opening my solo practice for adults, I worked in several middle schools, a family clinic, and a teen clinic. For a year and a half I worked at The Spahr Center, serving LGBTQ+ and HIV+ populations north of San Francisco. For two years I worked at New Perspectives Center for Counseling in San Francisco seeing adults and couples.

Over the last ten years I have sought additional training in working with trauma, including full training in EMDR. If you've experienced something upsetting and feel like you can't get away from it, EMDR can help.

I founded Laurel Therapy Collective to build intentional community of therapists supporting each other because I strongly believe this enables us to provide higher quality care for our clients.

I am also an adjunct faculty member at Pepperdine University in their graduate program.
