FAQs: Trauma Informed Yoga

  • Nope! Everyone is welcome.

Trauma sensitive yoga is grounded in creating emotional safety and bringing out your most self-compassionate inner voice. Everyone can benefit from that.

Trauma sensitive yoga avoids certain vulnerable poses and emphasizes self compassion and somatic awareness.

  • No, only our instructors and staff will be on camera. We don't want anything to distract you from your internal experience of this class.

  • All bodies and ability levels are welcome and celebrated. This class is focused on flexibility and mindfulness with only a few mild strength exercises included. Modifications are always given to honor body diversity. If you can't do any given pose, that's okay! You'll be off camera and no one will know.

Show up and appreciate what your body can do without worrying about what it cannot do.

  • Trauma memories get stored in your brain and body differently than most memories. Trauma informed yoga makes space for the mental and physical experiences that come up when we move and ask our body to do new or challenging things.

Trauma informed yoga also avoids or modifies poses that may be triggering to people who have experienced specific traumas.

  • Trauma is anything that overwhelms your ability to cope. It can be one big, disastrous thing. It can also be a stressful experience that happened over time. It can be a bad relationship or an unhealthy work environment. What matters is how you experienced it and how your brain categorized it.

  • Absolutely. In fact, for many people with trauma, doing yoga in the comfort and safety of their home is a better experience than going to a studio where they feel on edge and vulnerable.
