Common Issues Addressed In Therapy For Millennials
Millennials face unique stressors and challenges.
We feel stuck, isolated, ashamed, and hopeless. We may feel horror at the state of a political system that devalues us and lose sleep over the declining health of our planet. In this age of instant and constant information, pressure to succeed, and the proliferation of social media that enables us to relentlessly compare ourselves to others, it's no wonder our generation is highly anxious.
Our anxiety may prompt us to overwork ourselves trying to catch up, indulge in numbing behaviors, or isolate from friends and loved ones. It can feel overwhelming to think about re-engaging or trying new ways of coping.
Let's work together toward a calmer, more connected and joyful future.
Many millennials and young adults struggle with feeling "behind" their peers in some capacity. Whether it's dating, social engagement, or finding and building a career, it often feels impossible to "have it all." You may feel crushed by anxiety or a sense that you "should" have it all figured out. Family may not understand, and even go so far as to insist that other generations had it worse.
Improve Your Relationship Through Couples Therapy

Our trained Gottman therapists can help you break down negative patterns and teach you tools to make disagreements healthy and productive. Heal Your Trauma Through EMDR Therapy
Trauma can significantly disrupt your life, affecting your sleep, work, relationships, and sense of peace and security. It might feel like you've lost a core part of yourself, something you fear you'll never fully reclaim. However, there is a path forward.
Through EMDR therapy, a proven therapeutic approach, our experienced trauma therapists can help you break the link between traumatic memories and the distress they cause. You can regain a sense of calm and safety, even though the past events may never be okay. This 8-phase model prioritizes your safety and well-being, equipping you with coping tools to manage triggers before delving into trauma processing.
There is hope for healing. Take the first step towards feeling better by scheduling a consultation with one of our EMDR therapists today.

FAQs: Therapy For Millennials
-
As a generation, millennials have had it rough. Many external variables we had no control over significantly impacted our social, emotional, relationship, and career development. The 2008 recession that hit just as we were entering the workforce, a global pandemic, decades-long wars, and the proliferation of social media have left us feeling “behind” compared to other generations. The lack of acknowledgement from other generations of these very real stressors and setbacks can make us feel like we’re complaining or “did this to ourselves.” But we have actually had it pretty rough!
Therapy can help you work through your specific trauma, relationship issues, and help you create a life that aligns with your values and hopes. Reducing anxiety and burnout can go a long way in helping you feel like you’ve built a life you can be proud of.
-
You can address just about anything in therapy. As holistic therapists, we really do want to get the full picture of your life. Common issues are anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, burnout, grief, and feelings of overwhelm.
If we’re not the right therapist for your specific issue, we’ll be honest with you and refer you to someone who can help you feel better. If we do that, we hope you know it’s because we want you to get the absolute best care and we can’t be specialists in everything. If a therapist says they can work with anyone and any issue, be skeptical.
-
Working with a therapist who is also a millennial is a great place to start. But even some millennial therapists don’t understand the full picture of what our generation is up against. We often feel like the circumstances that set us back are our fault. A good therapist for millennials can look at your experience on both a large and small scale and help you reconcile what work is yours to do and what is not your reponsibility.
-
Yes, research conclusively has proven that teletherapy is as effective as in person therapy for most issues. We understand that some people have a personal preference for one or the other, but from an effectiveness standpoint, in person therapy and online therapy are equal.
-
The differences are largely positive; with teletherapy, you don’t have to commute, sit in traffic, find parking, or take extra time out of your busy schedule to meet with your therapist. We think that’s a huge plus. You can also continue therapy when you’re sick, traveling, or injured. This allows you to build good momentum with your therapeutic work and see results faster.
-
In our many years of offering therapy for millennials, we remain focused on the single most important thing in all our lives: relationships. When our friendships, family relationships, work relationship, and romantic relationships are good, we feel good. When those relationships need work or are missing, we feel less good. We’ve helped many millennials navigate dating, relationship stress, and setting healthy boundaries. It’s one of the most important things to address in therapy.
-
Absolutely. Burnout is fundamentally a misalignment in time and energy allocation in favor of work. While you may not be able to take time off, therapy can help you reallocate your resources and do more of what matters to you while still performing well at work. Furthermore, therapy can help millennials unpack the deeply held beliefs about self-worth and purpose that bleed into the workplace and create imbalances. We can also help you navigate difficult relationships at work that make burnout more exhausting.
-
A rough patch deserves support through therapy the same way a mental health issues does. At our practice, we’ve long since moved away from a model that fixates on diagnosis as the central reason for therapy. We believe in a holistic model of care that looks at your physical, behavioral, social, and inner wellness. If you are going through a rough patch but don’t think you qualify for a “full” diagnosis, therapy can absolutely help. And if you’re pretty sure you’ve got a diagnosis, you’re fully welcome here.
-
That’s totally normal. It would be weird if you felt fully comfortable talking to a stranger about deeply personal issues right away. Our style of therapy focuses heavily on the quality of your relationship with your therapist. We know that all relationships are built over time and through careful consideration and effort by both people. If you’re not comfortable, discuss this with your therapist. They might need to shift something they’re doing. If it’s not something to do with the relationship to your therapist, there is likely some messaging or feelings of fear and anxiety that can be talked about and worked through before discussing the content.

If there was a magic recipe, we’d bottle it and make it available to everyone. But alas, everyone needs to find their own personal combination of physical, behavioral, social, and personal self-care. But not to worry —over our many years of offering therapy for millennials, we’ve gotten pretty good at helping people figure it out! There are often many things that get in the way, and only so many hours in the day. We aim for significant progress rather than perfection.
